The visible scarring from nose cosmetic surgery (rhinoplasty) is minimal as incisions tend to be internal. External incisions are only made if the size of the nostrils are reduced, in which case small, unnoticeable scars are placed around the nostril creases.
Alterations to the shape of the nose are made through these small incisions. The nose cosmetic surgery is administered to the cartilage and bone that form the framework of the nose. Occasionally, certain bones may be repositioned to create a narrower and straighter appearance.
If the nose is flattened or has a weak nose tip, the surgeon may use implants to build up the size of the nose. This cosmetic surgery is known as augmentation rhinoplasty.
Your surgeon will examine and advise on the most appropriate nose surgery. The cosmetic surgery will take 2 hours and will be administered under general anaesthetic. You will usually need to stay in hospital overnight and wear a nose splint to protect the nose for a week after surgery.
You should be able to return to work 10 days after surgery and resume most normal activities within 3 weeks post cosmetic surgery.
It is typical that you will experience discomfort, bruising and swelling after the cosmetic surgery, this can be controlled with medication. The bruising will disappear by the time you return to work and swelling will gradually go down in the months following cosmetic surgery.
